Overall, North American issuers are broadly interested in the use of these card materials, such as recycled polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polylactic acid (PLA; a plant-based plastic), and upcycled recovered ocean-bound plastic, each of which has pros and cons. Feedback indicates that recovered ocean-bound plastic generates the most interest as a way for issuers to demonstrate their dedication to protecting the environment, grow new accounts, and increase card usage.
